I found it most entertaining to watch this passive-aggressive neo-hippie representing the black bloc come up against Chris’ cool, deliberate, authoritative demeanour. Admittedly, I had made up my mind going into this debate having seen first hand the blowback generated by the so-called “black bloc” at the G20 protest in my own city of Toronto. Their actions turned a lot of the sensible public against the greater whole of protestors, even putting a bad taste in my own mouth about a protest I would otherwise be fully behind. During and since the G20 we have seen a ramping up of American-style crowd management across Canada, backed by a justification vividly illustrated by the burning cruisers – a PR stunt even many mainstream Canadian news organizations believe was perpetrated by the police and swallowed hook, line and sinker by the bloc.
Propaganda is a documentary film – itself a propaganda piece – ostensibly produced for North Korean audiences about Western propaganda. Despite its brazen hypocrisy and clear intent as external propaganda the facts presented are mostly accurate and the typical North Korean moments of self-gratification are tolerably short.

Here is the formal statement I gave to Federal Police on 16 June 2012:
On a trip to visit family in Seoul in April, I was approached by a man and a woman who claimed to be North Korean defectors. They presented me with a DVD that recently came into their possession and asked me to translate it. They also asked me to post the completed film on the Internet so that it could reach a worldwide audience. I believed what I was told and an agreement was made to protect their identities (and mine).
Despite my concerns about what I was viewing when I returned home, I proceeded to translate and post the film on You Tube because of the film’s extraordinary content. I have now made public my belief that this film was never intended for a domestic audience in the DPRK. Instead, I believe that these people, who presented themselves as ‘defectors’ specifically targeted me because of my reputation as a translator and interpreter.
Furthermore, I now believe these people work for the DPRK. The fact that I have continued to translate and post the film in spite of this belief does not make me complicit in their intention to spread their ideology. I chose to keep posting this film because – regardless of who made it – I believe people should see it because of the issues it raises and I stand by my right to post it for people to share and discuss freely with each other.
I have translated this film, laid in the English voice over and subtitles, and on legal advice have blurred the identity of the presenter and/or blacked out certain elements.
Also interesting is the fact that there is only one scripted “interviewee.” You’ll find a lot of familiar stock footage in this film if you’re into Adam Curtis’ work or propaganda/mind control-related documentaries in general. Though it seems a little too tailored to the indy-documentary-loving Occupy Wall Street and truth movements and perhaps a little too honest about propaganda tactics to be made for their own people, it is neat to see things from the North Korean perspective – even if it has been tailored to be more easily received by Western dissidents.
