GPS Inventory
GPS devices are powerful embedded machines that incorporate everything you need for a useful portable computer: CPU/RAM, touch screens for user interaction, storage - often with external options, usually bluetooth and audio capabilities but most importantly they contain a GPS unit and can be obtained at thrift stores for sometimes as little as $3 while a usable but still low-quality GPS module meant for custom development that interacts by USB/serial/SPI tend to run CAD$20 and over at the time of writing. Indeed, many models will report the same serial NMEA 0813 data stream over their USB port that you would be working with on a dedicated module anyway and smaller units can be liberated of their enclosures, batteries and touch screens to provide your electronics project with a low-powered solution that is actually worth the price.
That being said the software that comes with them is of zero interest to me. I exclusively use Waze on a device with an active internet connection when I'm driving; sure Google might be eavesdropping on every rendezvous et liaison I make but it tells me where the gestapo are hiding and when you drive like a bastard (as one does) that's well worth dropping your drawers for the other G-man. Ya feel me?
So, I have taken to collecting these little overlooked devices to modify them. Not because I need them in an era of supercomputer class smartphones. But because I can't help myself; something about being denied hackery (so they thought) in my childhood. It's a pathology. I need somewhere to store my notes, too often I'll go on a research bender and spend hours coming across all sorts of juicy references just to let it all disappear into the aether when my memleaking browser collapses under the weight of over 9000 tabs.

Imported entries from the phone book in Russian show question marks instead of Cyrillic letters.
Adding a Greek POI causes the device to crash and reboot.

Does not have the "Change vehicle profile" option.

Garmin Spanner intercepts devices that normally connect as a USB mass storage device automatically and provisions a virtual serial port instead so you can both continue using your device's interface (it is not blocked as it typically is in mass storage mode) and you can pipe the NMEA data stream into GPS-aware software on your host device. The RF shielding is a great deterrent to further investigation or tomfoolery; as mentioned when I have time I intend to try to use a logic analyzer to hopefully tap useful serial NMEA or PVT (proprietary Garmin binary protocol) signals on the 18 pin connector mounted to the rear peripheral board and access to the filesystem through its standard USB Mass Storage interface sounds, at first blush, like a relatively easy way to extend the base functionality. I will also probably try to fiddle with the SDK; in the unlikely event I can't make any of these avenues work to enhance its utility I would have good motivation to remove those shields. This is a rather impressive little system for the cost.

Since GPS modules and SoCs in general are frequently deployed across numerous products from the same and different vendors I figure it makes sense to detail them separately from their complete products listed above. It's also a fairly safe assumption that if I'm working with the RF module directly either the system it came out of was too resistant to repurposing for higher-level functions to be worth my time when easier prey are just a trip to the thrift store away. I also use stand-alone, purpose-built modules like USB sticks, arduino shields, etc. which would benefit from a research dumping ground like this just as well. So with apologies for chopping things up a little please don't be looking for a particular order or 1-1 correlation; I will mention the chip used in complete devices if it's also covered here but you may have to do some jumping around to get the whole picture.

Sierra Wireless MC7700 (GOBI3000)
The Sierra Wireless MC7700 PCI Express Mini card uses the USB 2.0 lane available on virtually all PCIe Mini slots, including those that lack an actual PCIe 1x lane and ship with various Toughbooks, ThinkPads and HP elitebooks where, on these two platforms, they are among the WWLAN cards most commonly white-listed for use by most stock BIOS ROM images. They also provide the 4G capability found in some Netgear 3G/4G wireless routers, including those popularly distributed by Bell Canada (and should be salvaged from such devices while the shells are discarded, as this generation of Netgear routers suffer from numerous fatal exploits that are as trivial to exploit as they are shamelessly unmitigated).
The MC7700 also contains a GPS module. On Windows, the NMEA port is often configured to dump output on COM5, you can check what virtual serial port your setup uses through the Device Manager. On Linux the NMEA data is generally provided in a character device located at /dev/ttyUSB0, /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyAMC0 depending on your kernel or udev version or your particular flavour. Check dmesg if you are sure the appropriate module is loaded (use lsmod to check) and can't find the character device associated with the NMEA facility.
It is necessary to create an account and log in to download the drivers and firmware images directly from Sierra Wireless' site. Alternatively, driver and firmware packages are provided for direct download from Panasonic for Toughbooks and all versions of Sierra Wireless WWLAN cards shipped with their products at https://na.panasonic.com/us/support/wireless-wan-drivers-multi-carrier-software.
It must be noted that the correct firmware for your intended carrier must be loaded. Fortunately all major canadian incumbent networks (other than newcomers like Freedom (formerly Wind), please advise if the Canadian firmware works for them - or perhaps using the T-Mobile firmware?) - that is: Bell, Rogers and Telus (reselling Bell in most of Ontario but operating their own service elsewhere) are covered by a single image.
FM Traffic Data Sources
Two FM radio-based technologies were implemented in GPS receivers before internet connectivity became ubiquitous. One, now defunct was MSN Direct (c. 2006-2012) by Microsoft and delivered over the DirectBand FM subcarrier by commercial radio stations. The other is a standardized service called Traffic Message Channel (extant c. 2022). GPSBabel and NMEA Monitor are both input/output device proxies, file replayers, protocol monitors, filter/transformers, swiss army knives with so many features and such broad device support I couldn't pick one and end up installing and endorsing both.
